Everyone has enemies. Sometimes they come in human form, most often, they come in another form—the form of our thoughts. They come at us when we least expect it. They can come forcefully, penetrating our senses and leaving us paralyzed or they can come quietly and take over our mind leaving us unaware for the moment. It is the thought that fills our head with deceit and self-doubt that is the enemy. Each of these thoughts has one single purpose, to lead to self-condemnation and remove Jesus from our lives. It is as if a dark veil is trying to be placed between us and the Lord.
What are we supposed to do when the attack is relentless? We reach for Scripture. We pull out words from God’s love letter to us and use them as a defense. God gave us His word to support us, teach us, and show us His unending love. Open your Bible, find a verse that speaks to your heart and memorize it. Write it down and carry it with you. Place it in a prominent place where you will see it often. Recite it to yourself when that enemy begins to creep in. Some verses that I have found helpful: Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things, through Christ who strengthens me.” Psalm 23:4 “Even when I walk through a dark valley, I fear no harm for you are at my side.” Psalm 63:4 “For your love is better that life, my lips offer you worship.” John 14:27 “Do not let your hearts be troubled.” Hebrews 14:5-6 “I will never forsake you or abandon you. The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid. What can anyone do to me?” Spend time with your Bible and you will be amazed when the Lord reveals new Scripture verses to use as a shield against the enemies.
