I have a confession to make. There is something I have been keeping from you.
I have a second identity.
A part of my personality lies dormant for 360 days out of the year. During this time, my secret is hidden from the rest of the world. With the exception of an occasional glimpse of my true self, most people remain unaware. After all, who wouldn't think I was a little unstable if they knew the truth?
The truth is- Superman has a cape, Batman has his wings and I have….. A purple t-shirt!
That’s right -- a purple t-shirt with the words, “Church of Saint Paul VBS Staff” written on the front.
Those are code words for “This is the greatest week of the year when that all-consuming, explosive JOY and LOVE for the Lord can be released from your heart for all to see and no-one will think you’re crazy!”
No pretense, no hiding and no stifling those exuberant feelings of intense affection for my God and Creator. This is the week that I get to “let it all out.”
Yep, that's me. A little crazy I know. And that’s not all! Not only am I allowed to worship God and praise Him for an entire week, but I have the privilege of leading 500 kids in worship right along with me. It's indescribable! I am also given the opportunity to talk to those kids and tell them about Jesus and how much He loves them!!
Let me tell you something, those kids actually listen-intently. They are hungry for Jesus! They want to hear that they are important and loved and precious to Him. They hang on my every word as I tell them about our great God and how special each one of them is in His eyes.
Watching the expression on their faces, as they come to the realization that what I am saying is true, is an experience that brings tears to my eyes year after year. I never tire of witnessing that look. After all, that is the reason for the creation of the Give Him 5 message.
That message of love and friendship with Jesus is not exclusively for the children. It is for EVERYONE. It is for you. Living life for Jesus changes everything. Having a friendship and intimate relationship with Him can mean the difference between life as a daily drudgery and life as a joy filled experience of purpose and hope. This relationship brings peace in knowing that God is by your side and that He is never going to leave you. It allows you to trust in His plan for your life and be assured that He only wants what is best for you.
Like the words for my Give Him 5 VBS song says, “It’s great to be alive when I live my life for Jesus Christ. Now that I know your name, I’ll never be the same, because I gave my life to you Lord.”
Have you given your life to Jesus? It’s not hard. All it requires is a desire for Him. This simple prayer from my book To KNOW The Savior will lead you.
Dear Jesus, I believe you are the Son of God. I believe you came to earth and died on a cross for me. I believe that you rose from the dead, ascended on high and are seated at God’s right hand. You are the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, and I believe you are coming again. Dear Jesus, I come to you now because I need you. I am a sinner. I am sorry for my sins. Dear Jesus, forgive my sins. I surrender to you. Lord, I give you my life. Come into my heart and cleanse me with your precious blood. Make me whiter than snow. Dear Jesus, I receive you into my heart and I proclaim that you are my Savior, you are my Lord and you are my King forever. I promise to love you and follow you all the days of my life. By your Spirit, enable me to live the Christian life. Right now, before God the Father and God the Holy Spirit, before Mary, mother of Jesus, before all the holy angels and before all the saints, I declare Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior. Amen Now that you have made a commitment to Jesus, be intentional and spend time in prayer each day. Talk to Him as you would a friend. If you commit to daily prayer, you will find a new joy. Perhaps, like me, you will feel the need to seek a release. Who knows, there might even be a vacation bible school in your future or another unexpected adventure. Whatever it is, Jesus will be right by your side cheering you on.
