Jabez prayed that in receiving God’s blessings that he would not fall into the temptation that happens to many successful people, and that also evil people may not try to harm him. This also relates to the phrase in the Lord’s Prayer : “Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.” It is a similar request.
In 1 Chronicles 4:9-10, we find a short prayer uttered by an obscure man: ” Jabez was more honorable than his brothers. His mother named him ‘ Jabez ‘ saying, ‘Because I bore him with pain. ‘ Now, Jabez called on the God of Israel saying, ‘Oh, Lord, bless me indeed and expand my territory.
Jabez is a man appearing in the Book of Chronicles. He is implied to be ancestor of the Kings of Judah, although not explicitly included in the lineage. Jabez’s birth is difficult; for this reason, his mother names him Jabez (Hebrew יַעְבֵּץ [ya’betz]), meaning “he makes sorrowful”.
In 1 Chronicles 4:9 the Bible points out that Jabez was named after the pain and sorrow that the past generation experienced. Notice, the bold move of Jabez , he asked God to not only enlarge his existing territory , but to bless him indeed – meaning to bless him above and beyond what he can conceive or imagine.
Jabez had a name that meant pain, yet he became “more honourable than all his brothers.” He did not simply seek to change his name , as it were, instead, he took his supplication and cry to “The God of Israel” – the one who controls the destinies of people; one who can change the spell-casting power that may be inherent

His mother had named him Jabez, saying, “I gave birth to him in pain.” Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, saying, “Oh that you would bless me indeed and enlarge my territory ! Let your hand be with me and keep me from the evil one.” And God granted his request. The Prayer of Jabez is not magic and it is not selfish.
But Jabez was sick and tired of pain, so he asked God to keep him from evil and harm. He asked that God would make him secure. If he did not experience harm or pain, he would not cause pain to others. Jabez was a more honourable man that all his brothers .
The prayer of Jabez became very popular within sections of the fundamentalist Pentecostal Christian movement. Some followers were drawn to the prayer in cult-like devotion, using it in a repetitive manner as a mantra.
With its blatant materialism, the prosperity gospel eventually became an embarrassment for evangelicals. But ”The Prayer of Jabez ” offers a new view of the prosperity gospel . It preaches that it is perfectly fine to ask God for personal success, as long as that success has a godly purpose.
Jewish and Christian tradition identified this author as the 5th century BC figure Ezra, who gives his name to the Book of Ezra; Ezra is also believed to be the author of both Chronicles and Ezra–Nehemiah.

In these instances, such as with Isaac, Moses, Samuel, and Job, the act of praying is a method of changing a situation for the better.
