A prayer rug or prayer mat (arabic سجادة sajjāda, turkish: seccade or namazlık; persian: جانماز, urdu: جانماز jānamāz) is a piece of fabric, sometimes a pile carpet , used by Muslims and some Christians during prayer . “ Is it disrespectful to use a prayer rug as anything other than a prayer rug ?” No, unless you damage it and it isn’t yours. In which case you are actually disrespecting the ownership of it. Belief does not automatically gain respect.
Praying on a mat is not a requirement of the prayer . You do not have to pray on a prayer mat or rug . As long as the place is clean and free from impurities you can pray there and you don’t need a mat . The floor of the mosque of the Prophet (peace be upon him) was made of sand and dust.
A prayer rug is characterized by a mihrab design at one end which resembles an archway. Prayer rugs are meant to cover the ground while Muslims pray . The mihrab points towards Mecca when the rug is in use. Some rugs have a mihrab at both ends, which is defined as a double prayer design.
Muslims use the mat to ensure cleanliness and to offer prayer in an isolated space. While this isn’t a requirement in the Islamic religion, Islam does call on its followers to worship in a clean area. A prayer rug offers both of these and hence has become one of the most cherished items of any Muslim household.
Prayer rugs or mats are small, easily transportable rugs used by devout Muslims for kneeling on during daily prayer times. The rugs can be handmade or manufactured, and come in a variety of fabrics. While many may allow for machine washing , the safest method of cleaning is a simple hand wash .
Of course you can, If God is omni present, He is present in the toilet too. Its man-made rule that we shouldn’t pray in toilet . We can and we shall pray to him whenever we feel like. When we pray with our whole heart, even if we are in Toilet , he will respond there too.
There exists no restriction on the matter, but you don’t want to be praying on a dirty mat , so if you can keep it clean, it is permissible. If you leave it to grow rank with sweat, it would be best to avoid praying on it.
Small square, large square or any shape of cloth to be used as a prayer mat is fine. I have used my suit jacket at times and my scarf and my winter jacket and a towel and a sheet of paper etc. Anything that is clean that I can use to keep my face off the ground works just fine.
You can leave it laid out. There is no evidence for jinn walking over it. I fold it up and put it away so that no ones walks over with dirty shoes so that it doesn’t dirty the mat .
