confession – owning up to sin and asking for God’s mercy and forgiveness. thanksgiving – thanking God for his many blessings, eg health or children. petition – asking God for something, eg healing, courage or wisdom. intercession – asking God to help others who need it, eg the sick, poor, those suffering in war.
Prayer is a way of relating: to God, to ourselves, to those around us. In opening our hearts and minds and souls to God we are challenged to grow, change, and to love. Just as we make time to spend with those we love, so in making time to pray we are seeking to grow in our relationship with the Divine.
Prayer and meditation can influence our state of mind, which then have an effect on our state of body. It can help with anxiety, sadness, blood pressure, sleep, digestion and breathing. It also can influence thinking.
The basic forms of prayer are adoration, contrition, thanksgiving and supplication, abbreviated as A.C.T.S.

Paul shows how each power is used in Scripture and gives examples so that we may understand them better.
There is renewed power through prayer and fasting , because we are reminded that ultimately we are dependent on God. This self-denial of our exaggerated physical appetite, for a period of time, allows us to wait in faith and to trust God’s mercy. Prayer and fasting is a sign of our desire and hunger to seek God.
Jesus taught, “When you pray , do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men … but when you pray , go into your room, close the door and pray to your father who is unseen.”
God, through prayer , opens eyes, changes hearts, heals wounds, and grants wisdom (James 1:5). The power of prayer should never be underestimated because it draws on the glory and might of the infinitely powerful God of the universe! Daniel 4:35 proclaims, “All the peoples of the earth are regarded as nothing.
