Jabez is asking God to bless him greatly, exceedingly, or abundantly. He is leaving it up to God as the to the means of the blessings. This blessing is similar to “Thy Will be done” in the Lord’s Prayer .
The prayer is a simple one: “And Jabez called on the God of Israel saying, ‘Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain. ‘ So God granted him what he requested.”
Participants (N = 430) were recruited online and completed a measure of six prayer types (adoration, confession, thanksgiving, supplication, reception, and obligatory prayer ).
In 1 Chronicles 4:9-10, we find a short prayer uttered by an obscure man: ” Jabez was more honorable than his brothers. His mother named him ‘ Jabez ‘ saying, ‘Because I bore him with pain. ‘ Now, Jabez called on the God of Israel saying, ‘Oh, Lord, bless me indeed and expand my territory.
