The Lord’s Prayer appears in two places in the Bible . In the book of Luke, Jesus was praying, apparently by himself, and when he had finished one of the disciples asked him, “Lord, teach us how to pray the way John taught his disciples,” referring to John the Baptist.
Two millennia ago, history often was handed down by word of mouth before being put into writing. As a result, Catholics living in the eastern half of the Roman Empire usually added the doxology while those in the western half believed the “ Our Father ” as said during today’s Mass was sufficient.
Luke’s version of the Lord’s Prayer appears to be simple because it is shorter than Matthew’s version and it is shorter than the version that most people are familiar with. In general, prayer is not simple and Luke’s version of the Lord’s Prayer is not simple either.
In the Gospel of Luke 11:1-4, Jesus teaches the Lord’s Prayer to his disciples when one of them asks, ” Lord , teach us to pray .” Almost all Christians have come to know and even memorize this prayer .
Hail Mary , full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary , Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. For translations from the Latin into various languages, see Wikisource.

The Lord’s Prayer, also called the Our Father (Latin: Pater Noster ), is a central Christian prayer which, according to the New Testament, Jesus taught as the way to pray: Pray then in this way (Matthew 6:9 NRSV) When you pray, say (Luke 11:2 NRSV)
In teaching us to pray “ Thy kingdom come , Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven” Jesus wants us to petition the Father to throw Satan and his angels down from heaven, thus making God’s kingdom come to heaven. Then, Jesus can make His kingdom come to the earth, “as it is in heaven.”
Our Father , who art in heaven , hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven . Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
When Jesus first teaches the prayer he says when you pray say ” Our Father “. All prayer has to acknowledge our need of forgiveness and our need to forgive. So it’s not so much that there would be other ways of saying it, we say those words simply because Jesus told us to.
The basic forms of prayer are adoration , contrition , thanksgiving and supplication, abbreviated as A.C.T.S. The Liturgy of the Hours, the seven canonical hours of the Catholic Church prayed at fixed prayer times, is recited daily by clergy, religious and devout believers.
Personally, I do believe that silent prayer is perfectly fine. If it wasn’t, I think Jesus would have told us so. Whether you pray in silence or out loud, I believe that God hears both kind of prayers . As long as your prayers are earnest, He will hear and answer them.
“My God , My God , why hast thou forsaken me?” (Matt 27:46, Mark 15:34) “Father, into thy hands I commit my spirit” (Luke 23:46)
28 And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee upon the waters. 29 And he said, Come. And Peter went down from the boat, and walked upon the waters to come to Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried out, saying, Lord, save me.
The necessity of prayer for the realization of salvation is brought to light in the acts and teachings of Jesus. Thus, He exhorted His disciples to pray always and not loose heart. If Holy Mass is the highest form of Christian prayer , it must be of absolute necessity for any Christian that worth the name.
