Lord’s Prayer, also called Our Father, Latin Oratio Dominica or Pater Noster, Christian prayer that, according to tradition, was taught by Jesus to his disciples.
Pray then in this way (Matthew 6:9 NRSV) When you pray , say (Luke 11:2 NRSV) Lord’s Prayer .
|Matthew 6:9-13 (NRSV)||Luke 11:2-4 (NRSV)|
|Our Father in heaven,||Father , [Other ancient authorities read Our father in heaven]|
In fact, it may have been borrowed from King David’s exultation of God at I Chronicles 29:4-19, which says, in part, “ Thine , O Lord , is the greatness, and the power, and the glory and the victory and the majesty thine is the kingdom , O Lord , and thou art exalted as head above all.”
Our Father , which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive them that trespass against us.
The basic forms of prayer are adoration , contrition , thanksgiving and supplication, abbreviated as A.C.T.S. The Liturgy of the Hours, the seven canonical hours of the Catholic Church prayed at fixed prayer times, is recited daily by clergy, religious and devout believers.
The Lord’s Prayer appears in two places in the Bible. In the book of Luke, Jesus was praying , apparently by himself, and when he had finished one of the disciples asked him, “ Lord , teach us how to pray the way John taught his disciples,” referring to John the Baptist.
Our Father , who art in heaven , hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven . Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
When Jesus first teaches the prayer he says when you pray say ” Our Father “. All prayer has to acknowledge our need of forgiveness and our need to forgive. So it’s not so much that there would be other ways of saying it, we say those words simply because Jesus told us to.
—used to express solemn ratification (as of an expression of faith) or hearty approval (as of an assertion)
Use the term kingdom come to mean “forever” or “heaven.” You might sigh that you’ll be cleaning up the sand your brother’s dog tracked around your apartment until kingdom come . Saying you’ll do something until kingdom come is an exaggerated way to express your feeling that it will last forever — until the end of time.
Hail Mary , full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary , Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. For translations from the Latin into various languages, see Wikisource.
If the Theological Dictionary of the New Testament correctly identifies the meanings, the final use of “ amen ” is most applicable to the way we use it at the end of the Lord’s Prayer.
So Jesus gave them the Lord’s Prayer . “Our Father which art in heaven” means we’re praying to our Heavenly Father who lives in heaven. God likes it when we call Him Father, and He wants us to talk to Him just like we talk to our own father. God is our loving Father, and we are his special children.
