This power goes by many names – “God,” “The Universe,” “Spirit,” “The Divine” – and yoga is very yogic in not limiting this practice to one religion or faith system. Rather yoga is offered as a tool that works within any faith or without a faith at all.
Om is the basic sound of the universe; chanting it symbolically and physically tunes us into that sound and acknowledges our connection to everything in the world and the Universe. The rhythmic pronunciation and vibrations have a calming effect on the body and the nervous system similar to the effects of meditation.
The fundamental purpose of yoga is to foster harmony in the body, mind, and environment. Yoga professes a complete system of physical, mental, social, and spiritual development. For generations, this philosophy was passed on from the master teacher to the student.
When the Bible mentions meditation , it often mentions obedience in the next breath. An example is the Book of Joshua: “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it.
What new yogis may not be aware of, however, is that despite its reputation as a gentle, low-impact practice, yoga carries risks , as with any exercise routine. The practice can exacerbate carpal tunnel syndrome, destabilise joints, and contribute to strains, sprains and tendinitis.
Chanting AUM has both physical and mental effects on us as it calms our mind and in return calms our nervous system. I later learned the reason we always chant AUM 3 times . The reason is; it symbolises: ॐ the three worlds of the Soul: the past, the present and the future.
108 represents the ultimate reality of the universe as being simultaneously one, emptiness, and infinite. 108 has long been considered a sacred number in Hinduism and yoga. This number also connects the Sun, Moon, and Earth: The average distance of the Sun and the Moon to Earth is 108 times their respective diameters.
Yogis often meditate on the four “measures,” or parts, of om . Though commonly spelled om , the mantra actually consists of three letters, a,u, and m. (In Sanskrit, whenever an initial a is followed by a u, they coalesce into a long o sound.)
Now close your eyes and take a deep breath in and then breathe out (breathing exercises) slowly . Again take a deep breath in, and start chanting Om . Repeat it three times, and you will feel the vibration of the Om sound reverberate through every single cell in your body. Anyone can recite this mantra.
OM is the highest sacred symbol in Hinduism. The word OM is so much powerful that this single word can produce powerful and positive vibrations which allows you to feel the whole universe. OM is the mantra which cleanse our Aura and also related to the third eye chakra also known as (BROW CHAKRA)..
3. OM increases energy + endorphins. If you are feeling lethargic, it has been said that chanting Om ( silently or out loud to yourself) for a few minutes can increase your energy levels and help you feel refreshed.
The holistic effect that is attained through yoga enables practitioners to not only improve their physical strength and flexibility, but also their emotions, mentality and concentration. The spiritual aspect of yoga can help yogis develop integration of the inner being as well as oneness with the Supreme Consciousness.
